When the feature documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” became a Box Office hit many people thought it was a one off. In the era of reality TV and celebrity culture surely the documentary was a dying genre. Well, the sell-out success of The London International Documentary Festival – now five year’s old – says otherwise.

Oscar Winning Directors such as Martin Scorsese and Steven Soderberg, both with UK premieres at LIDF, are helping drive the new enthusiasm for documentary, according to Festival Director Patrick Hazard.

“We’re seeing a new breed of feature documentary which combine all the cinematic quality of a Hollywood movie with well-written story telling. A big part of the festival this year is our “Portrait” programme which includes features from Martin Scorsese about Elia Kazan and Brigitte Berman’s “Hugh Hefner Playboy, Activist and Rebel”.

“And digital technology is bringing these same cinematic values to more traditional “activist” documentaries from younger film-makers. We’ve had fantastic reviews of our Aboriginal rights movie “Our Generation”, and “Agadez”, which features the African guitarist Bombino. These films have an underlying message but the sound, vision and story is superb, and that’s why they are reaching crossover audiences, says Hazard.

But perhaps the biggest reason for the popularity of the documentary festival is the sheer variety of films on offer. While Hollywood Studios play it safe with formulaic plots, the LIDF festival features films from every corner of the globe and all manner of weird and wonderful topics ….from morris men to Berlin Cabaret, tsunami to boxing, terrorism to war reporting, Burma to Nepal, capitalism to happiness., men in saunas to forbidden ar t…. there is something for everyone.

Special focuses of LIDF include “The Arab World” (14-15 May) and Pakistan (18th May) – through a programme of films designed to highlight the rich cultural heritage of these troubled regions as well as political influences and sensitivities,

Infinity Theatre Company brings professional singers and musicians to perform an evening of the greatest songs of the twentieth century, in the Annapolis premiere of “My Way, A Musical Tribute to FRANK SINATRA”, which is a favorite of the biggest regional theatres across the country.

Infinity Theatre Company previewed the show in Manhattan in March as a benefit performance in which the show received a standing ovation. As part of its mission to enrich Annapolis with professional New York City theatre, Infinity is importing the show, starring four singers and a three-piece jazz band. Infinity Theatre Company was founded by producers Alan Ostroff and Anna Roberts Ostroff, who is an Annapolis native.

“My Way” is full of Sinatra’s most popular songs, such as: “The Way You Look Tonight”, “I Get a Kick Out of You”, and “Fly Me to the Moon”. It was conceived by David Grapes and Todd Olson, with a book by Todd Olson. The piece contains many themed medleys with over fifty songs by composing luminaries like Harold Arlen, Sammy Cahn, and Johnny Mercer. The medleys include Frank’s Favorites Medley, the Summer Medley, the Moon Medley, and the Survivor’s Medley. These medleys lead the audience on an immersive journey into music that stands the test of time—the songs that conjure up the love, romance, and passion of Sinatra and the century he symbolizes. “My Way” flows between music and the stories that made Sinatra an icon professionally and personally. The show ends with the dramatic title song “My Way”, one of many stirring close harmony pieces between the singers.

“My Way” clarifies the legend of Frank Sinatra for all generations, allowing the people who grew up listening to his music and watching his TV specials and film performances to share it with their children and grandchildren.

For the performers, Mr. and Mrs. Ostroff will be playing the younger of two couples, representing Frank’s early years of crooning with Tommy Dorsey’s band. They played the leads in Infinity’s 2010 production of the off-Broadway classic “The Fantasticks”, after years of playing roles in theatres around the country and in New York.

Infinity found its stars for “My Way” in veteran performers Joseph Dellger and Mary Jo Mecca, who represent Frank’s swingin’ sixties Rat Pack era. Mr. Dellger has performed on Broadway, as Magnus/Marquis de Lioncourt in “Lestat”, the show based on Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” with music by Elton John, as well as in “Ragtime”, in which he played one of the lead roles, Father. Mr. Dellger also performed in several national tours of Broadway productions, including “The Phantom of the Opera”, in which he understudied and frequently performed the Phantom. Ms. Mecca has a long resume from both stage and screen. She has worked at regional houses across the country, including the Guthrie Theater, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Alley Theater, Pasadena Playhouse, Walnut Street Theatre, and Goodspeed. Ms. Mecca has performed in several world premiere productions, such as Frank Wildhorn’s “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Blocks”, a musical by Jonathan Larson, the creator of “Rent”. Some of Ms. Mecca’s screen credits are “Law and Order”, “Frasier”, “Guiding Light”, and the Disney feature film “Holes”.

The band of “My Way” is led by David Libby, a pianist who played in the orchestra for Broadway tours of “Beauty and the Beast” and “Kiss Me Kate”. Mr. Libby is also the Musical Director of “My Way”, and was Musical Director of Infinity’s production of “The Fantasticks”. Stephen Palko is on upright bass, and has played for tours with Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus and “Menopause the Musical”. Gary Tillman is the percussionist and has played the Broadway productions of “Les Miserables”, “Mamma Mia!”, “Sunset Boulevard”, “Miss Saigon”, “Cabaret”, and many others. For the final two weeks of the run of “My Way”, the pianist is Mary Sugar, whose Broadway national tours include Monty Python’s “Spamalot”, “Sweet Charity” with Molly Ringwald, “Peter Pan” with Cathy Rigby, and “The Producers”. Ms. Sugar was also conductor/pianist for Leslie Uggams.

Singers Forum, a non-profit musical oasis committed to providing the highest quality vocal training for New York City residents, will be offering a weekend intensive Teen Cabaret Workshop from Friday, June 24 through Sunday, June 25.

Lennie Watts is a eight-time MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets), five-time Backstage Bistro, and three-time Nightlife Award winner. He is the only person to receive awards as an outstanding vocalist, director, producer, and booking manager.

He has been active in the New York cabaret scene for over 20 years. In addition to directing in small cabaret venues, he has directed events at Symphony Space, Town Hall, and BB King.

He has toured nationally and internationally with productions of The Music Man (Marcellus) and The Wizard Of Oz (Lion). Other roles: Psuedelus (A Funny Thing…), Herod (Jesus Christ Superstar), Nicely Nicely Johnson (Guys and Dolls), Jinx (Forever Plaid).

He has performed at Town Hall in several concerts, including Broadway Unplugged and Broadway By The Year, 1949, and can be heard on the cast recordings of both shows. As a theater director, he has directed productions of Godspell, Dames at Sea, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Phantom. Watts is the creator of “Cablab” and “Summer In The City” (with Lina Koutrakos), both critically acclaimed professional cabaret performance workshops.

He was voted “Best Male Vocalist 2008” by the members of Cabaret Hotline Online. He is currently the President of MAC, and was just named one of “The 50 Most Influential People in New York Cabaret” by Nightlife Exchange.

Jeff Cubeta is in demand as a vocalist, musical director, and rock musician. As a vocalist he performed the tenor solo in Orff’s Carmina Burana with The Three Rivers Choral Society. He sang as tenor soloist at First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh and has sung as a guest soloist at Chelsea Community Church in New York. He currently is rehearsing a new solo cabaret act tentatively scheduled to make its New York premiere in the autumn of 2011.

As a musical director, Mr. Cubeta returned to Feinstein’s at Loews Regency with Eric Michael Gillett in February 2011, performing Mr. Gillett’s show Widescreen: Songs From and About the Movies. Other shows performed with Eric Michael Gillett (in New York and on tour nationally) have included Cast of Thousands (showcasing the work of esteemed composer and lyricist Craig Carnelia), and Best of My Love. Jeff musical directed Eric Michael Gillett and Raissa Katona Bennett in Romance in These Times, and he musical directed the 2010 Bistro Awards, including performances by Liz Callaway, Cheyenne Jackson and Danielle Grabianowski.
